Discover how to set metal type to produce a unique letterpress printed piece. Set a poem, a bookmark, personal stationery, or greeting card.

Learn the proper way to set metal type in a composing stick, pull a proof and then take your idea to the press. We’ll teach you the importance of leading and how to properly adjust the line spacing of your form. Become familiar with the history of letterpress, common type sizes, word spaces and quads, all while having some fun making a project of your own.

You will then learn how to lock your form in a chase, do make ready, and print a small edition of your design. Learn about furniture, quoins, reglets and a proper make ready for the press. You will learn how to lubricate the press, apply ink, adjust impression, set guides, and print your project on a hand or foot treadle operated Platen press.

While your beautiful printed pieces dry, you will learn to properly wash-up the press, and finish your job by distributing your type.
